I can't resist chiming in on this... To new grandmothers on my gift list, I am giving WHAT! CRIED GRANNY by Late Lum, a story of grandmotherly excess which all my granny friends universally love and totally understand!

To families with babies I am giving the new Iona Opie and Rosemary Well's HERE COMES MOTHER GOOSE.

To emerging readers I am giving THE LOST FLOWER CHILDREN by Janet Taylor Lisle.

To kids who have already read all three Harry Potters (that is every kid I know), I am giving WHICH WITCH by Eva Ibbotson.

To middle school age fantasy lovers I am giving THE FOLK KEEPER by Franny Billingsley.

To kids who like math better than reading (and also those who like both), I am giving THE NUMBER DEVIL by Hans Magnus Enzensberger.

For middle school fans of "drama in real life" I am giving the autobiography THE CHINESE CINDERELLA by Adeline Yen Mah.

We are fortunate that our elementary schools have turned so many kids on to Shakespeare and to them I will give Aliki's WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE AND THE GLOBE which can be enjoyed by the whole family.

We have a large Japanese community who are actively engaged in library programming. To the adults I am giving IN SEARCH OF THE SPIRIT by Sheila Hamanaka. To the Japanese children I am giving TASTY BABY BELLY BUTTONS. Though both books will be enjoyed by families of all cultural backgrounds.

In agreement with Ginny, I am also giving Macaulay's BUILDING THE BOOK CATHEDRAL and David Carter's THE ELEMENTS OF POP-UP: A BOOK FOR ASPIRING PAPER ENGINEERS.
