Favorite Gift Books...

I realize we are in the midst of THE countdown to THE big day, but I had to mention a holiday book I gave to several of my young friends...Auntie Claus by Elise Primavera. I originally fell in love with it at the first of the month when I shared it with my second graders...then started buying copies for gifts. The Auntie Mame'esque title character is loved by all...especially that diamond key hanging around her neck! Another favorite part is the chant of the B-B-and-G elves: "Spoiled brats and crybabies, whine babies, and all the ones who don't believe: Here's some coal and here's some gunk- fill a stocking that smells like skunk!" (BBandG = Bad Boys and Girls)

Another book I am giving as a millennium gift to special friends is, Prayer for the Twenty-first Century by John Marsden. Marsden is a well-known Australian author. This succinct poem is incredible! With only a little over 150 carefully selected words, Marsden touches upon many of the fears we all have...young and old alike. I am tempted to type it in its entirety, but am choosing not to since it might get lengthy for an e-mail.

Wishing you ALL a happy, healthy holiday! Regards, Clark Underbakke 2nd Grade Teacher Birmingham, Alabama

Other great gifts - there are three new Dr. Seuss cd's that came out in November (I think) -- one is all songs, and the other two are sets of stories. The one we have is wonderful, and includes (1) Green Eggs and Ham, (2) Yertle the Turtle, (3) The Rabbit, the Bear and the Zinniga-Zanniga, (4) The Big Brag, and (5) Bartholomew and the Oobleck. It's narrated by Marvin Miller, and the voices are marvelous.
