For my grandkids (I no longer can buy for a whole school, darn it), I got _Snowflake Bentley_ and _Halley Came to Jackson_ for the seven-year-olds, _Down by the Station_ for the 3-year-old, and
_Goodnight Moon_ for the babies. _Halley_, by Mary Chapin Carpenter, has lovely illustrations by Dan Andreason; _Down by the Station_ is the old nursery song illustrated rather whimsically by Will Hildebrand, and
_Goodnight Moon_ was a poor choice because both mothers informed me their babies already have the book!
Earlier this year, I found a book called _Irma, the Flying Bowling Ball_
(1994), which enchanted seven-year-old granddaughter because her daddy is a bowler and she'd NEVER seen a book about bowling before.
For grown-up kids, I bought Graeme Base's _The Worst Band in the Universe_ with its wonderfully complex illustrations, goofy word play, and outer space theme for the son interested in music and science fiction. For the daughter who loved Louisa May Alcott as a child, I got Alcott's _The Quiet Little Woman_, three Christmas stories originally published in the 1870s.
