Vermonters chose Sector 7 as the winner in our annual mock?ldecott.
(80 participants - public and school librarians, some writers, classroom and art teachers, and children's literature experts.) The very strong honor books were Weslandia and Black Cat.
Newbery: In addition to many of the books so articulately discussed already, many of which I loved, two more personal favorites this year were Adventures of Blue Avenger, by Norma Howe, and Unbroken, by Jessie Haas. I think I've already mentioned Unbroken once or twice. Blue Avenger was fresh, funny, entertaining, and imaginative; its meditations on free will, violence, love, and weepless lemon meringue pies delighted me all the way through. Maybe not Newbery, but great reading. Leda
