He may never top Tuesday, but David Wiesner's Sector 7 is the best picturebook I've seen this year. At the beginning I was thinking it was too much like Briggs' Snowman, but it turned into a very original, inventive story. He gets the wordless storytelling just right. You can follow the action pretty easily, but the lack of words draws you right into it, forcing you to notice the details and subtleties of the illsutrations, and the personalities of the characters (cloud and human). Usually wordless tales are based around one simple idea or action...but I can't think of any that have so much meat to the story, short of Lynd Ward's Silver Pony, which is chapter book length. I was impressed and pleased to see the picture book length of Sector 7 expanded from 32 to 48 pages so Wiesner could tell his whole story. The illustrations in Sector 7 maybe aren't quite as dazzling on their own as Tuesday or Free Fall, but they work perfectly, bringing a very fun and entertaining story to life.
