Book Gifts!

Wow! I enjoy picturing all of those gift-wrapped books you're recommended to each other! Thanks for the great suggestions - Maureen, Amy [Cody], Nancy, Arthur, Tana, Dorian, Ruth, Maia, Robin, Jean, Betsy, Ellen, Clark, Toni, Karen, Mary, Kate, Cathy, Nina, and Margaret! Terrific advice!

Meanwhile, I've been book-shopping for my family, which includes people of almost every age. Local booksellers volunteered the news that the children's books they can't keep in stock this season include
"Bark, George," "A Child's Calendar," and "William Shakespeare and the Globe." According to one Madison bookstore proprietor, each of these superb books is just "walking out of the store" as fast as she replenishes the stock.

Other books I like to give as gifts are some of the "first" books published in the Harper Growing Tree imprint: "First Steps" by Lee Wardlaw, illus by Julie Paschkis; "Hey, Little Baby!" by Nola Buck, illus by R.W. Alley; and "You Are My Perfect Baby" by Joyce Carol Thomas, illus by Nneka Bennett. By the way, there's no such thing as
"too many copies" of the all-time favorite baby gift book "Good Night Moon" by Margaret Wise Brown, illus by Clement Hurd. Or too many copies of "'More More More,' Said the Baby" and "Lucky Song" by Vera B. Williams, or "Snow" by Uri Shulevitz. These are such favorites that some families need more than one copy to enjoy throughout their toddler's first years!

Other new books choices I've been delighted to give as gifts during the year are "Last Licks: A Spaldeen Story" by Cari Best, illus by Diane Palmisciano (Melanie Kroupa Books / DK Ink, 1999) - a picture book story featuring those hard bouncy pink spheres; and "Play Like a Girl: A Celebration of Women in Sports" by Sue Macy and Jane Gottesman
(Henry Holt, 1999) - an incredible assemblage of quotes and full color action photos of today's young athletes - what a great forerunner to the next Olympics or the next snowfall or basketball game or soccer match! This one's for girls & women ages eight through adult!

In my family we always say that even though we know it's a book in that package, we don't know WHICH book. We give each other books throughout the Twelve Days of Christmas, and we each get two books within that period of time. With thousands and thousands of books for gift givers to choose from, book gifts are always surprises! As Betty reminded me during our phone conversation today, it's OK to remember that book gifts can be opened again - and again. And they can be given all year round! Keep your suggestions coming, because we all want to continue book-shopping for gift books during every season!
