For illustrations, my favorites are:
by Jeff Brumbeau and Gail de Marcken -
Marcken uses such lush colors and vivid images that the pages fairly whirl;
and by Wendy Froud and Terri Windling.
Wendy is married to Brian Froud, of "Fairies" and "Gnomes" fame, and her
sculptures are the mate to his illustrations -- quite enchanting.
For a novel, my favorite is:
by Louise Erdrich, although I enjoyed Cooper's immensely too. But the
depth and richness of Erdrich's text surpasses most children's fiction that
I've read, and its images linger in my mind.
For a new-to-me (but not 1999) auto/biography:
I wish I could give everyone a copy of <Bowman's Store>. I
expected it to be good, based on his other work, but I was
floored at just how good it was. His interweaving of dream
imagery, traditional stories, and tales of his past makes for an
autobiography that is part essay, part story, and part like
comfort food - I felt safe, even in the unsafe memories - in
the hands of his story. Truly, a rare experience.
