I've appreciated everyone's suggestions for gifts! These are the 1999 picture books that I purchased for my two year-old niece:

BARK GEORGE, by Jules Feiffer
*The expressions of the characters, especially those of George's mother and the Vet, are hysterical.

THE RED-EYED TREE FROG, by Joy Crowley, photographs by Nic Bishop.
*The vibrant pictures in this concise little book are breaktaking. The pictures and text capture one day in the life of the tiny, tropical frog.

HUSH, LITTLE BABY: A FOLK TALE by Marla Frazee
*The pictures extend the words to this classic song in a delightfully humorous way.

I also got her some classics:
*A few GEORGE and MARTHA books by James Marshall.
*I'M GOING ON A BEAR HUNT by Michael Rosen
*THE SNOWMAN by Raymond Briggs
