I couldn't agree more with Ginny's professor. I think it's important for kids to see that adults who are avid readers pick things up, then run out of time and interest in a book, then might go back or might not, and it's not a sin not to finish a book if it doesn't interest you. Learning to become a lifelong reader in school is the only time when one is required to race to read novels as quickly as possible according to someone else's timeline and assumptions about one's interests and abilities. I think this approach can cause children to view all reading matter as "required reading" and view all reading as a chore, which is sad.
I read the whole Betsy-Tacy series as a child, and felt pleasantly grownup reading about Betsy's newlywed tribulations. The same phenomenon occurs in the "All-of-a-Kind Family" series, and I read them all.
