THROUGH MY EYES by Ruby Bridges is one of my favorite books of 1999. It is a picture book for older kids and has been greatly appreciated by a number of adults for whom I've recommended it.
Ruby Bridges has written a poignant, intense and intensely interesting account of her year in first grade (in 1960) as the first and (for a long time) the only black child in a previously all white school. She also includes insights and perceptions about the adults around her, most notably her mother and her teacher, but others as well. The photo illustrations greatly enhance the book. Terrific book design as well.
