I was lucky enough to read Kevin Henkes' _The Birthday Room_ during the short, dark days between a holiday that celebrates the birth of a child and a holiday that celebrates the birth of a new year. There is so much in this novel: fabulous images of ripeness and birth (all the fruit orchards, Aunt Nina who looks like a cantaloupe), a protagonist so real I am sure I would meet him if I hung around Madison, Wisconsin long enough, and a family that is unusual yet still one of the most believable families I have ever met in a book. And so much hope for the futures of both the family and the individuals in the story -- without a bit of false sentiment. What a treat.
