We know this is a time of year when many schools and libraries are conducting award discussions, such as mock Newbery and Caldecott discussions, with both adults and with children. Throughout the month of December, we invite you to share the results of your local discussions on CCBC-Net, as we discuss some of our favorite books of the year.

Last night here at the CCBC we had a lively discussion of books eligible for the Coretta Scott King Award, attended by 27 teachers and librarians from the Madison, Wisconsin, public schools. The results of our discussion were as follows:

For writing: Winner: "Monster" by Walter Dean Myers (HarperCollins) Honor Book: "Bud, Not Buddy" by Christopher Paul Curtis (Delacorte)

For illustration: Winner: "In the Time of the Drums" illustrated by Brian Pinkney and written by Kim L. Siegelson. (Jump at the Sun/Hyperion) Honor Book: "The Hatseller and the Monkeys" by Baba Wagu? Diakit?. (Scholastic)

Complete lists of the titles we discussed can be found at: http://www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/awards/cski.htm
