Yep, I too, have forever it seems, paid my own way to ALA Annual and Mid-winter. I do take the expenses off my taxes--but it is still money out of hand. But it is my professional obligation so I pay.
Now--as to those wonders who write about why they are once again running for Council in their self-serving messages, I would be interested to know just who pays for their trips? And..what higher office they expect to gain
(my own theory is that these folk wish to be President of ALA for deeply personal self-serving reasons).
There, I've said it about the pat responses on this list-seve.
