I have two titles to mention, though I just discovered they came out in late 1998. (I got them off the "new" shelf at my library this year.) I hope I'm not violating parameters by bringing them up--and I hope they weren't mentioned in December of last year, before I was a part of this discussion!

Novel:

THE OTHER SHEPARDS, by Adele Griffin (Hyperion)--Mysterious tone sustained throughout, tinged with desperation towards the end. It captures the loneliness of latchkey children (even those whose parents aren't in a permanent state of bereavement, as Holland and Geneva's are) and portrays the ways that children interpret adults' behavior when they aren't allowed to dialogue with the adults in an honest way.

Picture book:

THE DAY I SWAPPED MY DAD FOR TWO GOLDFISH, by Neil Gaiman, illustrated by Dave McKean (Borealis/White Wolf)--So much fun! Some find the illustrations and graphic elements cluttered, but I thought the whole book felt like the inside of a kid's room (and mind). I love the dad walking with the newspaper in front of his face. I love the jealousy over the little sister always getting her way. I love the cumulative elements. Wonderful stuff!

Best, Erin
