This discussion reminds me how much I preferred Speak and Bud, Not Buddy to When Zacharary Beaver Came to Town. I find Curtis to be a writer of incredible compassion and integrity, and those qualities seem to shine through his characters. I think Speak was my favorite novel of the year, perhaps because I have a teenage daughter, but I loved the voice, the wry humor and the way the protagonist's artistic and personal journeys are woven together. Although I enjoyed Zachary, I wasn't gripped by it in the same way.
