Poetry for YA: Stop Pretending by Sonya Sones

Poetry for elementary children:

Little Dog Poems by Kristine O'Connell George, June Otani Deceptively simple, amazingly concise, perfectly illustrated. I can't stop reading them aloud.

In the picture book arena my favorite for the year is Tasty Baby Belly Buttons by Judy Sierra, illustrated by Meilo So , great read aloud, I just don't get tired of it. Illustrations are perfectly matched to the text. Subtle humor, scary but not too scary giants. Of course, Weslandia.

Elementary fiction, The Trolls - Polly Horvath, I am reading it aloud to four classes and as soon as I read the first 6 pages they stopped begging me to read Harry Potter.

Birthday Room- Kevin Henkes

YA- - I agree, Speak - Laurie Halse Anderson, note the biting humor contained within. and Zachary Beaver.

Not much buzz heard about either of these books but I think are great and have received great feedback from the kids, The Well of Sacrifice by Chris Eboch, set in the ancient Maya civilization, action packed adventure, strong female protagonist, fact filled historic fiction.

Crusader by Edward Bloor, a YA novel from the guy who brought us Tangerine. Fast moving plot, detailed setting amazing character development.,

I'm sure there is is more but these are what jumped to mind.
