My favorite book this year is "Bud, Not Buddy", by Christopher Paul Curtis. It is humorous, and fun, yet serious, and the characters were very real for me. Bud (not Buddy) is fresh (by this I mean he is a character we haven't really seen in a while, even though 'the Orphan' seems to be popular this year. He is resourceful, funny, not at all a bad guy- and yet ) and the reader gets to know him quickly. Curtis gives an encouraging nod to librarians, and this of course creates a warm fuzzy for us. But that's not the only reason to applaud the book. The language feels right, the story is engaging and though some may find the book overly sentimental, it still works. I'm just glad Curtis finally wrote another book, and took his time to produce another excellent one!
