I would have to agree with every title on Dean's list (remarkable how brilliant minds, etc....) but have to add a few novels:
Folk Keeper by Franny Billingsley (my sleeper pick for big awards at year's end) Stop Pretending by Sonya Sones Mind's Eye by Paul Fleischman Vanishing by Bruce Brooks Whitechurch by Chris Lynch Frenchtown Summer by Robert Cormier, which I happen to think is the best book of the year.
In the picture book arena, I have to mention: Happy to Be Nappy by bel hooks and Chris Raschka Amelia and Eleanor Go For a Ride by Pam Munoz Ryan and Brian Selznick We Goddesses by Doris Orgel and Marilee Heyer
...but I think Weslandia is the most wonderful picture book of the year and pray the Caldecott committee agrees.
