I liked THE BIRTHDAY ROOM also--the setting especially, but I couldn't understand why there was so much family trauma over losing part of one's little finger. My mother retired as a nurse, my husband is a nurse, my cousin is in a wheelchair, my friends' son lost a finger in a chain saw accident, I've lost young friends in car accidents, there are just so many worse things than losing part of a finger. Did I miss the point?
