My favorite picture book of the year is Kate Lum's "What! Cried Granny". I definitely skew towards funny books, and this one left me howling. I liked the illustrations because they were wild and vibrant, just like the text. Jules Feiffer's "Bark, George" is lots of fun, too.

My favorite novel was definitely "The Cure" by Sonia Levitin. It's been awhile since I've read a book where I read the last page, shut the book and just sat back and said "Wow!" It was powerful, involving, moving, hopeful
(as hopeful as a book about the black plague and genocide can be), and not overly didactic. Gives me shivers just thinking about it.

I'm sure my list will grow in the next several weeks, because I only just got my hands on "King of Shadows", and there are a number of others that come highly recommended (e.g. Monster, When Zachary Beaver Came to Town, The Birchbark House) I haven't got hold of yet. :)
