I second this opinion. Bud, Not Buddy is my favorite middle grade novel of the year. The first person narration is perfection, giving us a distinctive voice and unerring child's eye view. I will never forget the description Bud gives us of Herman E. Calloway's back and the sounds he makes when he discovers the truth. Bud Not Buddy is not as original as The Watsons Go to Birmingham, but it is more finely structured, with Bud's quest as its moving force. In The Watsons, over a hundred pages (highly entertaining as they are) pass before the story story actually starts, and the shift in gears almost knocks us out of our seats. Bud's story progresses in a way that reflects his personality, deliberate and determined.
