My favorite novel sneaked up on me this year. When Zachary Beaver Came To Town by Kimberly Willis Holt sat on my book pile for weeks before I had a chance at it. As a reader I was taken away to Antler, Texas . . . so moved by the gestures, quirky endearments, and individualist spirit expressed by all of the members of town. I find Holt's prose simple and cinematic, particularly the scene between Cal's mother and the soliders as well as the ladybug waltz.
I was worried at the beginning of the book that too much attention would be given to the objectification of Zachary. But the subplots of Cal and his family, Scarletta and Juan, even Ferris, were so satisfying. With economy of words, Holt gave us such a big piece of the human heart. I love *tender*, *generous*, even *sentimental*. This novel fulfilled all those needs!

"With a library you are free, not confined by temporary political climates. It is the most democratic of institutions because no one - but no one at all - can tell you what to read and when and how."
