I think the funniest detail in the first Harry Potter book is that for his birthday, Harry (the badly treated child) received a coat hanger and a pair of his uncle's old socks. That has to be the final ignomy! It makes the point that Harry's life up to that point was too awful to believe, and the only way to survive was to laugh at the ridiculous extremes to which his aunt and uncle went to be nasty to him. Or maybe my sense of humor is just weird (I still crack up when I hear, "Good evening! I'm Chevy Chase..and you're not!"
