My 9 yr old son Sam and I just finished reading the first Harry Potter last night. We have already read some great fantasy together the last few years, including The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the first nine Redwall books. I found Harry Potter fun to read aloud, even if some of the names and lines were challenging. Rowling has a talent for writing fine sentences.
I wouldn't be too concerned about Harry and friends talking about cheating.
(I didn't even remember that part.) If young reader can handle Pippi Longstocking smoking and Goldilocks making unlwaful entry into a stranger's home, they'll handle the cheating aspect without resorting to it.
I'm trying to figure out what the back cover illustration (at least the paperback) refers to. Someone holding a candle. I may be dense but I don't want to go through the book again. Can anyone clue me in? I should just ask any kid on the street, I'm sure they'd know. Sam couldn't remember either and he's good with details.
By the way, Sam slept in our room last night. We finished the book too close to bedtme. He had the image of What's His Name on the back of Quigly's (?)head on his mind.
Rob Reid Lecturer, University of Wisconsin?u Claire (80%) plus Youth Services Coordinator, Indianhead Federated Library System (50%)oh, never mind
