I think that children are always in a bit of a hurry to grow up. The one way to make sure that older kids stop reading a series of books is to have it become popular with the little ones! Same thing with toys and fads. I hope the pull of Harry will be for the older readers.
Because I teach in a K-8 school, I see this phenomenon every year. Pokemon used to be for the middle graders (3-5). Now the oldest kids who admit to liking them are in the second grade. Backpack keychains, Goosebumps books...all have gone down the same path of popularity in the past few years.
