I found Hermione's persona perfectly consistent. Smart girls may not mean to be show offs, but are preceived that way more often than not. They are only irritating if girls who study bother you, and that does bother the other students who don't study. Hermione ended up buddy to Harry anyway. She has feelings which get hurt. I second "wonderful Child."
