I was going to respond privately to Ellen Wittlinger's post, but realized that I wanted to make a more public statement of agreement with her. In fact, one of the "motherlode of great books for children" out there this fall is Ellen's own book, _Hard Love_, which I read in galley form and immediately sent out to several 14-year-olds, who devoured it in one sitting and didn't want to give it back. Boys and girls alike loved it.

So my message is, don't give up, Ellen! I'm highlighting _Hard Love_ in the teen section of my Fall bookstore newsletter, and I know I won't be the only one. It may not have the amazingly broad age-range appeal of Harry Potter, but it will find its audience. Anyone out there who hasn't discovered the book should definitely take a look. This is the kind of well-written, funny, hip but generous-hearted book that, like stephen chbosky's _perks of a wallflower_, should get lots of word-of-mouth recommendation from the readers who count: teenagers, and the booksellers and librarians who care about them.
