Didn't jar me at all--I was just a little overwhelmed that Rowlings is throwing in apparently *every* fantasy element there is (invisibility, philosopher's stone, orphan with famous parents and a destiny, etc....). A bit of overkill, though they enliven the stories.

Anyway, both the _Once and Future King_ and _Through the Looking Glass_, major fantasy stories with British settings, have a unicorn (which is on the British coat of arms, I think?). I think of unicorns as pan-European (all those medieval tapestries!). Centaurs, I think, also appear in The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe--I think at the battle.
