In the Harry Potter universe, I don't think there is a difference between wizards and witches--not like there is in Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea universe, say. Ms. Le Guin has some truly fascinating things to say about the subject in TEHANU, which I don't think is written for children, although the first three Earthsea books manifestly are.
