Harry, witchcraft & Narnia

Having sometimes laughed, sometimes cheered, often been amazed and always intrigued with everyone's comments about Harry, I have a question for people that have studied children's literature longer than I.

This particular discussion about witchcraft and wizardry, and other discussions I've had about Harry as a potential Jesus figure, make me wonder how readers responded to CS Lewis and the Narnia books as they were being published. Was the Christian content discussed in a similar fashion as we are discussing witchcraft here? Was it appreciated? Was it controversial? I would love to learn more about this.

I grew up reading Narnia and the Christian content was never part of my conscious delight in the books. I re-read two volumes recently and was amazed that I completely missed this angle as a child. I wonder if children reading Harry today will re-read these books as grown-ups and see witchcraft and Christian stories beneath the fantasticly layered stories and text.
