Nearly all fantasy and folklore books contain magic--even if the magic is only that animals can talk. I don't think that is the core of the issue. I own the trilogy, and I enjoy reading the books. However, I think parents object to books about the occult, as opposed to--for example--books about a magical school bus that can fly (among other things). Some parents do not believe a positive portrayal of the occult (however funny) is appropriate for their children.
