Harry Potter

One of my colleagues (who was a little nonplussed by the first book) commented that Rowling has an uncanny ability to meld together bits and pieces from all over literature and pop culture. A little Roald Dahl here, a sprinkling of Star Wars there, a dash of Jelly Bellies in the middle (with the traditional comic fantasy trick of taking a normal bit of life and speculating on what would happen if taken to the extreme). The unicorns and centaurs worked for me because I guess I've read enough other things that brought elements together from different mythologies (Amy Goldschlager mentioned Neil Gaiman's Sandman comic book series, which did an excellent job of just that). I personally think Joseph Campbell would have been proud.
