Eliza, Thank you for telling me that the early time of the month before the next discussion really gets underway is an appropriate time to make an addendum to the last discussion. Seeing the comments at the end of the month about the Native American objects now in the Natural History Museum on the Mall in Washington, D. C., brought to my mind that there may be people who are interested in hearing about the progress of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian which was established by an Act of Congress in 1989 and had the ground breaking ceremony in late September for its new building being built between the Air and Space Museum and the Capitol Building. The planned openning is 2002 but we locals hope to see the building rising soon behind the construction fence and hope visitors will enjoy seeing it being built, too. The New York Research Branch is in the process of moving to the Cultural Resources Center in Suitland MD in the Washington area, a five year endeavor. Questions about access to that collection can be directed to (301) 238f24 and appointments can be made to use the parts of the collection available for use during the move.

Information about the Museum is available through the Smithsonian Institution website:www.si.edu, specifically at Http:www.si.edu/resource/faq/nmai/start.htm which is called :"Smithsonian: Native American History and Culture" and includes links for information about other resources such as the Arctic Studies Center and Recommended Reading List including Publications for Children and Resources for Teachers and Parents. I noticed it included Slapin and Seale's Through Indian Eyes. There is also a list of "Real Child Books" but no literary creation list, that I could see.

In the Washington area, many of us have a "favorite museum" and the openning of a new one is a very special event in the life of the city. In just a short time, actually, now, we are looking forward to many people visiting the exhibits and attending programs of all kinds. The Holocaust Museum has become a real treasure, both for the exhibits and the people who participate in public discourse by visiting it. This large museum on the Mall being called The National Musuem of the American Indian will also become a real treasure I think.

I got alot out of last month's discussion and am looking forward to what this month's discussion on Harry Potter brings to the mailbox. I read the book when other librarians here heard about it as soon as it was published and it is a staff and patron favorite here.
