Suggestions for publishers, writers open to including LGBT

Dear ccbc-net-ers:

I've been waiting for today because it's been so interesting to read the last month's discussion, mulling over the issues and at the same time carrying on a parallel set of wonderings in my mind: what about books, characters, fiction, nonfiction that include lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) people, and specifically, LGBT parents? I'm a lesbian mom deeply involved in both children's books (through reading to my children, 2 and 5, every day, and my own reading of fiction and nonfiction for older children), and in advocacy for LGBT parents, through my work for Rainbow Families, a Minnesota nonprofit working to make the world a safe and affirming place for our children. My main work is editing/producing a quarterly journal for Rainbow Families.

A member of Rainbow Families approached me with the following question:
"where should I submit my manuscript?" She's written a picture-book story in which the central character has two moms. The story is not about having two moms, however. This is the kind of book I am starving for, and though I haven't read her manuscript, I want to support her quest for a publisher.

Are publishers ready for these stories?

Are writers ready to let LGBT parents into their imaginations to populate their stories?

If any writers have questions about LGBT families, I am connected to a network of over 500 families and would be happy to serve as a conduit for providing some cultural fact-checking.

Please respond if you have suggestions for a publisher for the writer who approached me. She has already tried Alyson.

Dear listkeepers, guardians of the gate: please consider at some point a ccbc-net discussion about LGBT characters in books. Call it Coming Out and Beyond... because there is so much to life after the coming out part, and that's the part that is so woefully underrepresented in books.

Thanks for a fantastic month of thoughtful discussion. Onward to November!!

with gratitude for the CCBC,

Betty Tisel
