Down Under & Over Here: Children?s Book Illustration from Australia and America
November 13, 1999 to February 20, 2000
Plan to visit the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin to view more than 55 original artworks created for the pages of classic children?s books from Australia and America.
Along with the joy of viewing this collection of some of the best in children?s literature, the Museum and the Marathon County Public Library, have teamed up to present 14 weeks of extraordinary programs and events that will increase the appreciation of the authors and the artists represented by this group of books. Events are planned at the Museum, the Library and at area schools.
High on the list of planned events are visits from two Australian and one American children?s book creators. Bob Graham, creator of Queenie, Benny, and Rose Meets Mr. Wintergarten, will visit Wausau for the opening weekend of the exhibition, November 13-November 16. Vera Williams (January 21 and 22) from New York City and Donna Rawlins (February 4-8) from Sydney, Australia will also participate in classroom visits, large-group gatherings, storytelling, autograph sessions and more.
Among the public programming opportunities is a Book Lover?s Brunch with Bob Graham. Friends of the Marathon County Public Library will join Friends of the CCBC and other book lovers at the Wausau Club, 309 McClellan Street, Wausau, on Sunday, November 14, at 11:00 a.m. The cost for the brunch is $12.50. To register for the Book Lovers Brunch with Bob Graham call 715?5p10.
A web site will soon be available at www.downunderoverhere.org for children, parents and educators to learn more about the exhibition activities and the sponsoring agencies. Look for this site to be active by November 11. A complete calendar of events will be available on the website.
The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum and the Marathon County Public Library were awarded a Model Programs of Cooperation grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Grant funds are being used to support the education components of the exhibition, Down Under & Over Here: Children's Book Illustration from Australia and America. Concepts of diversity, creativity, and multiple points of view will be explored in the galleries, in reading rooms, on stages, through the Internet, and more...all designed to enhance learning and provide quality family experiences.
To register for the Book Lovers Brunch with Bob Graham or to receive a printed Down Under & Over Here calendar of events, call 715?5p10, or FAX 715?5q03.
