Belated reply re. the Nesbit books:

As a kid I just fell in love with the Bastable children and the Psammead BECAUSE the children were so real. They got their gloves dirty, they whined to and with each other, they fought like tigers until threatened from outside when they were solid, and the Psammead is such a grumpy adult with deep pockets one must wheedle and badger.
