Evaluating . . . Continuing the discussion

Hello,

This will be a short post after my two lengthy ones.

We are now moving on to focus on two books that are about contemporary American Indians. Both are written by Joseph Bruchac. One is his autobiography, "Bowman's Store" and the other is a middle-grade novel "My Heart Is a Chief."

Could we start with the segue that Kate McClelland suggested, the use of folklore as an introduction to the chapters in Bowman's Story. How successful is this? How does this "traditional" literature shed light on this contemporary Native account?

Or any other aspect of these contemporary non-fiction and fiction books that you would like to share with the CCBC community -- and how you evaluate them as literature for young readers.
