handful of excellence vs. host of mediocrity

Jeffrey, yes, yes!

Let's hear it for those few excellent books that sing. As a mom reading dozens of picture books weekly to my young kids, let me tell you, there's a lot of mediocrity out there, in all subject areas. Sigh.

I'm going to be sure to support new/young writers' programs that offer mentoring by wonderful authors. When I hear of these programs (we have at least one excellent one here in Mpls. run by The Loft) I could contact the folks running them... and suggest that they support the writing of great children's books by up-and-coming writers. Perhaps if you know of such programs where you live, you could do the same.

I loved "the birchbark house" and have given copies to three nieces as gifts. This is another way to promote the books that sing.
