I have seen this request on another list serv to which I belong and discussing it does point out a difference between CCBC-Net and other list servs. CCBC-Net is a focused list serv with specific moderated discussions. This month the discussion is focused on books for children and young adults by and about American Indians (as well as any comments from former discussions, e.g., September's on Canadian children's literature). So if any of you have comments other than on these topics -- please do submit them to the list servs that are not focused on certain authors, books, subjects. If anyone has comments for Taryn or others on this very important and far reaching topic of young adults' readings dealing with accidents/emergencies, please send them to their individual e-mails.
The comments on the CCBC-Net topic of the month so far have been rich, insightful, and, for me, thought provoking. Jonathan mentioned Old Tallow as a favorite character and wished she could have her own book. Brad expressed the same attraction to Omakayas and her adventures with her little brothers -- wanting to know more. What is it about Louise Erdrich's writing that grabs and holds the reader's attention -- and makes him or her want to read on -- even on beyond the book in (which as I understand we will have the opportunity to do). This, too, was my experience. Once I picked the book up, I could not put it down. And what makes the characters so "alive" to us? And are there other characters to which you are especially drawn?
Let's continue our good discussion!
Eliza
