Jeffrey's Canton's posting and mediocre books

Jeffrey Canton ended his post saying: As children's lit spokespeople let's make sure that good books get all the attention they deserve and lobby for more of them but let's not try to create an artificial literature to fill the gap - better to have a handful of excellent books than a library that's full to the brim with a host of mediocre titles.

Hear Hear Jeffrey! I normally just sit back and read the postings on CCBC. I rarely respond to the discussions...and this particular discussion was of very little interest to me. I'm not even sure that what I have to say is completely on-topic, and I'm sure it will be unpopular...

As a librarian I am going to spend my limited budget on books of quality, based on reviews. Let's not make books just to get the topic you want out there. As a librarian working daily with children and homework assignments and teachers who don't take the time to do their own research, I look for books that fit the curriculum. Don't give me mediocre anything, I won't buy it.
