Debbie, thank you for your question. Generally, the way in which Joe and I work is that I suggest ideas and he expresses interest or not. The second book we worked on, FOX SONG, came about when I asked Joe to write something about a family relationship in a contemporary Native American family. FOX SONG is a beautiful and poignant book and received good reviews, but the hardcover was went out of stock and was not reprinted. Then because of the interest in the book to the publisher, it was brought out in paperback. So, please know that you can have an impact.

There is a great need for contemporary Native American stories, as you say. I only wish I saw more submissions of this nature. I would like to. Currently Joe and I are looking at at expanding a poem of his that you may know BIRD FOOT'S GRANDPA as a picture book. It's a wonderful poem that is often anthologized.

I wonder if he encountered any problems with his books about contemporary Native Americans? I understand that some publishing houses have rejected manuscripts with modern day characters (Indian woman as lawyer, e.g.) because the traditional literature (legends, etc) are more appealing to the consumer. Did he say anything about getting his contemporary stories accepted by publishers?

This sounds wonderful! I think we need this format very much... books that show both sides in their humanity. Does anyone know of others that have done this?

Debbie
