The Birchbark House

Reading the comments on The Birchbark House has certainly sparked my interest although as much as an evocation of the lives of First Peoples in the past is of value, I think that in many ways we need to introduce children to more contemporary images. Certainly novels like The Birchbark House help to redress the misinformation that children have been given in fictional form about Native Peoples but the culture of First Peoples needs more contemporary backing.

In Canada, there is a growing First Peoples' publisihing industry and in an earlier e-mail someone pointed out the work of Pemmican Publishing which has done some great work. Writers like Rhian Brynjolson have created great picture books that focus on contemporary First Peoples' kids There are also important picture books being produced by more mainstream publishers as well. Annick Press has for more than a decade published Inuit storyteller Michael Kusugak who writes most often about his own childhood in the Arctic. Jan Waboose has a stunning picture book, Morning On the Lake, published by Kids Can Press which focusing on the close connection bewteen a grandfather and his grandson and Waboose is an author to watch for - she has a new book this fall from Stoddart Kids, Firedancers.

Writers like Martha Brooks whose name came up in last month's discussion of Canadian young adult writers has sentivitely looked at cross-cultural connections in her stunning novel, Bone Dance which mingles Native and non-Native characters in a story that will resonate with readers for months after they put down the book. In Canada, Native writers like Beatrice Culleton and Jordan Wheeler are exploring the lives of First Peoples teens.

Most of Erdrich's own writing for adult is set in the here and now - the past needs celebrating but so do the lives of contempary First Peoples kids.
