AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR YUMI HEO will present a free public lecture in Room L160 of the Elvehjem Museum on the UW-Madison campus on Wednesday evening, November 10, at 7 p.m. Ms. Heo's books include One Afternoon
(Orchard, 1994), Father's Rubber Shoes (Orchard, 1995), and The Green Frogs: A Korean Tale (Houghton, 1996). She is the illustrator of The Rabbit's Judgment (1994) and The Rabbit's Escape (1995), both published by Henry Holt; The Lonely Lionness and the Ostrich Chicks: A Masai Tale (Knopf, 1996); and So Say the Little Monkeys (Atheneum, 1998). Books will be sold before and after the lecture, and Ms. Heo will be available for autographing. Co-sponsored by UW-Madison Asian American Studies Program, the Madison Metropolitan School District, and the Friends of the CCBC. WILD ABOUT HARRY? Join the CCBC librarians and other interested adults in a special CCBC book discussion focusing on the Harry Potter books on Monday, November 15, 7-9 p.m., in the Elizabeth Burr Room, 4289 Helen C. White Hall. The discussion will collectively examine Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (1998), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (1999), and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (1999), all published in the United Sates by Arthur Levine Books/Scholastic Press. LILLY'S COMING TO TOWN! The Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra (WYSO) is premiering a collaborative multimedia work developed especially for children and families on Saturday, November 20, at the MATC Mitby Theater in Madison, at 2:00 and 5:00 p.m. Author Kevin Henkes will narrate his book Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse while the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra performs a commissioned work by Daron Hagen based on the story. The concert is supported in part by the Friends of the CCBC and the Madison Area Reading Council. For more information, contact the WYSO office at 608&3320. TREATIES, TRADITONS, & TRIBAL SOVEREIGNTY: EXPLORING TRIBAL IDENTITY IN WISCONSIN is the focus of a workshop for K teachers on the UW-Madison campus on December 2 and 3. A two?y exploration of tribal cultures will incorporate key thematic strands in social studies as presenters examine critical historical and current issues from diverse perspectives. Participants will be provided with tools and opportunities to develop teaching strategies that integrate new material with state social studies standards. The CCBC will provide a book exhibit and lead one session.
