Obviously one of the most appealing things about The Birchbark House is the wonderful family that Omakayas belongs to--a family I couldn't help wishing I was a part of myself. In that respect it reminded me of several other favorite fictional families such as Mildred Taylor's Logan family, Christopher Paul Curtis' Watson family, and Gary Paulsen's Larson family.
In all cases, members of these families draw upon each other for strength and comfort and love which serves to insulate them, to some degree, from problems in the world oustide the family or individual personal shortcomings and insecurities. I think Omakayas' family is no exception, and I look forward to reading more about this wonderful family.
Jonathan :-)
