Carolyn, thanks for calling our attention to the list of recommended titles compiled by Debbie Reese on the ERIC database, which Debbie mentioned several days ago. I agree that it's a helpful list. I'm especially glad to see some titles from the "We Are Still Here" series published by Lerner. These are photo-essays about contemporary Native children, aimed at about 3rd-5th graders, and I think they're among the best books we've seen in the 1990s.

Debbie also has "Where Did You Get Your Mocassins" by Bernelda Wheeler on her list. This is a good example of an excellent book that might get overlooked, because it is very simply produced with a stapled binding and it has black-and-white illustrations. But I have used this book over the years in preschool storyhour many, many times and it's one of those rare, "never?il" picture books. It fits very nicely into storyhour themes dealing with family, grandparents, clothing, school, or where things come from. I used to use it a lot with the theme "Stories that ask questions." Aside from being a great read-aloud, teachers also like to use this book with older children who are newly independent readers and with students who are learning sequencing skills.

Debbie had a great list of recommendations. I'm forwarding it to our county children's librarian. Other favorites?
