Thank you Debbie Reese for your wise words about women as portrayed in children's literature about Native Cultures. Those of us who are tempted to write stories set in cultures outside of our own should read a caution in your message so beautifully conveyed. There's so much we must know in order to write with heart and authority, and so much that we can't know. With the best of intentions, the deepest digging, we still risk the integrity of the impressions we bring to children through our stories based in others' cultures (or original stories based on our own cultures but including others). Each of us sees the greater world through the colored lens of our own culture. Our diversity begs for our respect.
