I found Uncle Ronald at a Mpls. Public Library and read the book in one day, mostly in one late-night sitting. And now I want to read anything Brian Doyle has written.
The deft blending of humor (Uncle Ronald's waking up sounds, related in order by the narrator, Mickey) and horror (the abuse dealt out by Mickey's father and Second Chance Lance's first owner) are seamlessly combined. And such likeable characters. I wish Uncle Ronald was my uncle.
I'm trying to put into words some analysis of Uncle Ronald taking in both an abused horse and an abused child. The parallel situations are striking. It's not metaphor, it's something else I can't quite describe; but Mickey gets to hear about and observe Lance while he's coming to grips with his own situation.
Thanks, CCBC, for another chance to read an author I never would have discovered without you. Your finds and recommendations enrich my family's reading life (and life in general) and I am continually grateful.
