1) Author Katherine Paterson will deliver the 1999 CHARLOTTE ZOLOTOW LECTURE, "The Invisible Child" on Thursday, October 7, 8:00pm (CDT) at the Wisconsin Union Theatre on the UW-Madison campus. This annual lecture honors Charlotte Zolotow, a distinguished editor for 38 years at HarperCollins Children's Books and author of more than 65 picture books. Preceding the lecture, the 1999 CHARLOTTE ZOLOTOW AWARD for outstanding writing in a picture book will be presented to Uri Shulevitz for "Snow" (Farrar, 1998). This event is free and open to the public. For "frequently asked questions" about the 1999 Charlotte Zolotow Lecture arrangements, visit the CCBC webpage
(http://www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/czfaq.htm). Parking is available that evening. See webpage for details.
2) Some of the IBBY Regional Conference lectures to be given in Madison on Oct. 8-9 will be videostreamed (i.w. webcast) internationally beginning October 11, as will Katherine Paterson's lecture on Oct. 7. See "Points of View" in the CCBC webpage for details (www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/).
The technology and the staff to plan and manage this global outreach are furnished by the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. One of the people involved in the planning and implementation of the videostreaming is CCBC-Net's good friend Chris Dowling. We thank Chris and everyone else in the School's CIMC and IMDC who are making these speeches accessible to all who with access to the necessary equipment.
Don't despair. Look at the directions before you decide you cannot take advantage of this opportunity!
3) CCBC BOOK DISCUSSIONS: If you can come to the CCBC, we encourage you to participate in one or both of the forthcoming CCBC Book Discussions scheduled on October 22 & November 19. These discussions are open to all adults interested in reading and talking with others about new books for children and young teenagers.
We discuss about a dozen new books each month. The discussions are held in the Elizabeth Burr Room. There is no registration fee or advance registration. Just show up! The books to be discussed are posted on the CCBC webpage
(http://www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/up4disc.htm)
Copies of the books to be read are at the CCBC reference desk and may be used in the CCBC or borrowed from the CCBC on an overnight basis. Sometimes participants locate copies in local libraries or bookstores.
The monthly book discussions are scheduled between 3:30 - 5:30pm
(Central time) This is not a private book club. The discussions are not programs to observe. Everyone participates in the discussion. Although it isn't necessary to have seen or read all of the books on the discussion list in advance, it's expected that participants will be familiar with a minimum of two. Some participants stay only one hour, because they are interested only in highly visual books or only in young adult books. Usually the highly visual books are discussed during the first hour, although during October they'll be discussed during the last hour.
If you need to use a car in order to come to the CCBC, you might want to know that metered parking is available underneath Helen C. White Hall on campus; bring lots of quarters! The city's Lake St. parking garage is a ten-minute walk from the CCBC. Of course it's always possible to walk, or use the bus to get to the CCBC.
4) The CCBC staff posts weekly book reviews of new books on the CCBC webpage. Look at the Book of the Week and former Book of the Week book reviews (http://www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/review.htm) We've had difficulties with our server lately, and we're also consumed with the plans for the IBBY regional conference, so if the webpage has not been accessible or is not quite up-to?te this week and next, please understand.
5) BIOGRAPHY AND AUTOBIOGRAPHY FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS is the subject of a completely new CCBC Educational Telecommunications course to be held on two Thursdays, Nov. 11 & 18, 4:30-5:50pm (CST). Join Ginny Moore Kruse, Kathleen T. Horning and Megan Schliesman as they provide an overview of the trends in biography and autobiography publishing and introduce some of the most highly recommended, recently published books. For information about registration fees, etc., contact Linda Mudnt (pnone 608&3D52) or write to her
(LEmundt at facstaff.wisc.edu) at the Continuing Education Services of UW-Madison's School of Library & Information Studies.
6) MANY OTHER THINGS ARE HAPPENING at the CCBC. The CCBC staff will be busy off?mpus as well as at the CCBC throughout the next three months. See the CCBC webpage or get check your copy of "THE CCBC THIS SEASON" for dates, times, places, etc.
