It's been great to follow the different experiences that list members have expressed about Canadian young adult fiction.
A writer whose work is equally stunning as those discussed is Michael Bedard whose supernatural/horror stories include the linked novels, A Darker Magic and Painted Devil which are focused on a terrifying magic show from the past that moves through time with terrifying consequences and Redwork which is also a novel with a supernatural bent that is utterly compelling. Bedard has also authored a number of picture book biographies using fiction to make great artists accessible to younger readers. He has biographies of Emily Dickenson, Willa Cather, the Bronte children and most recently sculptors Frances Loring and Florence Wyle.
Welwyn Katz is another writer uses uses the supernatural to explore the lives of contemporary kids in novels including False Face, The Third Magic and Out of the Dark.
Annette Goldsmith mentionned Janet Lunn's anthology of supernatural stories, The Unseen and Lunn has also used the supernatural to great effect in novels like Shadow in Hawthorn Bay and Double Spell.
There's a whole world of Canadian children's material to discover and I'd urge interested list members to check out The Canadian Children's Book Centre site at www3.sympatico.ca/ccbc where you'll find great recommendations to Canadian children's titles.
