Tim Wynne-Jones's novel Stephen Fair won the CLA Book of the Year Award for Children last year (1998). I couldn't put it down - he's really good at creating believable worlds and likeable teenage characters and then putting them into some sort of fix they have to get out of. In this case, Stephen Fair is the main character and the plot involves a family secret. The text is rich with imagery and symbolism, beginning with his name. The setting and family situation are so different from those in The Maestro, which I also loved.
